House of Rep gives security ultimatum to Tinubu

 1. What exactly happened

Rep. Ibe Osonwa from Arochuku/Ohafia Federal constituency, Abia State moved a motion tiled:

"A call for immediate executive action on the surge in banditry, daily abduction of school children and the perilous security situation in Nigeria schools and places of worship"

After the debate, 360 members of house passed 4 key resolutions:

2. The 4 Resolutions/Ultimatum

    a. Direct order to Tinubu: transmit "Urgent and solemn appeal" to President Tinubu as Commander in   Chief, reminding him of his oath to protect lives and property per section 14 (2) (b) of 1999  constitution.

    b. Aggressive Strategy Demands: Immediate deployment of an aggressive, unrelenting and comprehensive security strategy" to:

  •  Dismantle bandits strongholds
  •  Secure schools and place of worship
  •  Ensure unconditional release of captives

    c. Service Chief Ultimatum: "if administration proves unstable to halt worsening security within a clearly defined time frame, service Chiefs should honorably resign from office, having failed to fulfill primary purpose of government"

    d. Oversight: Committee of Defence, National Security & intelligence and Army must intensify oversight and report back to house in 2 weeks for further legislation action.

3. Why now? What triggered it

Osonwa cited:

    a. Escalating Kidnapping/banditry nationwide despite huge defence budgets

    b. Systematic attacks on schools/churches: "Abduction of school children disrupted education and deepened out of school crisis. Thousand forced out of classrooms"

    c. Reactive response: Current security response is "largely reactive and insufficient" creating impression Govt is " losing control of parts of the country"

Recent incident mentioned in related motions:

  • June 1, 2026: Bandit kidnapped ~25 people in Ayegunle Bunu, Kogi state
  • May 31, 2026: 8 killed in Gwon-Ajang, Plateau State
  • Zamfara: Bandit impose N100m "tax" on Tsafe LGA communities

4. Tinubu and service Chiefs response so far

    a. Tinubu to service Chiefs 6 days to go: "Nigerian expect results, not excuses. No more excuses. We can not allow crisis since 2009 to persist. Be innovative, pre-emptive, courageous, deploy technology"

"Govt shall never succumb to terror, banditry. Safety of Nigerians remain top priority"

    b. Defence HQ pushback- 11 hours ago: Maj Gen John Enenche (retd) said " Changing service Chiefs every 6 months is not the solution". Pastor Adeboye had also given 90 days ultimatum for them to resign if they fail.

5. What happened next?

    a. 2-week deadline: House Committees must report back by June 23, 2026

    b. If no results: Pressure will mount for Tinubu to sack service chiefs. This is 3rd time Reps passed such motion, they did same in 2020 under Gbajabiamila asking Buhari to sack then-service chiefs

    c. Constitutional limit: Reps can’t sack service chiefs directly. Only President appoints and removes them. Their power is oversight with public pressure.

This is Reps putting Tinubu and security chiefs on public notice. “Results, not excuses” is the new line. If banditry/school abductions continue in next 2 weeks, expect louder calls for sack/resignation.
