NYSC just approved major changes to both the uniform and orientation program.

 It’s the first big overhaul in 53 years.

Here’s what’s changing as of the FEC approval on Monday:

1. NYSC Uniform: Redesign Approved

1. New uniform approved: FEC approved a redesigned NYSC uniform to reflect “professionalism and national pride”.
2. Why: The current design has remained largely unchanged for decades. The new one is meant to meet “contemporary standards” and improve comfort, identity, and appearance.
3. Note: This is different from the viral AI videos from 2024. This one is official FEC approval in 2026.
4. Skirts for female corpers: Separately, a Federal High Court in June 2025 ruled NYSC must allow female corps members to wear skirts if it aligns with their religious beliefs. 

2. Orientation Camp: Extended and Restructured

1. 6 weeks instead of 3: Orientation will now run for 6 weeks, up from the traditional 3 weeks.
2. New focus: The longer camp will have stronger focus on leadership, entrepreneurship, digital skills, vocational training, and specialized career streams.
3. Graduation, not Parade: The traditional “Passing Out Parade” is being replaced with a formal graduation ceremony.
4. Camp standards: A national grading and certification system for orientation camps was also approved.

3. Other Big Reforms Approved

1. Civilian leadership: Military leadership replaced with a civilian Director General. Military will still handle security.
2. 11 skills-based streams: The 1-year scheme restructured into 11 specialized skills based streams.
3. Tech call-up and safer deployment: Technology driven call-up process and “risk sensitive deployment” to protect corps members.
4. Skills-based PPA: Primary assignments will now align with your academic background and career path.

4. 2026 Batch B Dates to Note

1. Batch B Stream I: Orientation started June 10, 2026 and ends June 30, 2026.
2. Niger State: Orientation was suspended due to camp renovation, then moved to FCT Kubwa camp from July 7 – July 27, 2026.
3. Enugu & Osun Batch A Stream II: Ran April 28 – May 18, 2026 due to renovations. Other states: April 22 – May 12, 2026.

What’s next? The Attorney General in conjunction with Federal Ministry of Youth Development were directed to amend the NYSC Act to give legal effect to these reforms. So full rollout will depend on that.
